Key Stage 3
This is an outline of how student groups are organized and the subjects that are taught at Key Stage 3. If you require any additional information then please contact the relevant Head of Department or Head of Year.
Students in year 7 are placed in a mixed form group made up of students from all the primary schools. They stay in this form group for registration and some lessons but setting exists in a number of subject areas. As part of the national Key Stage 3 strategy, the importance given to literacy and numeracy in the Primary years continues and this will involve additional support for those students who are felt to need such help.
In years 8 and 9, students stay in their form groups for registration but for English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Languages they are placed in a teaching group or set appropriate to their ability.
All year 7 to 9 students follow a common curriculum of the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Information Technology, French/Spanish, History, Geography, Religious Education, Art, Music, Drama and Physical Education. In addition, all students take a Design and Technology course which includes Food, Graphics, Textiles and Resistant Materials. Our most able students also study German or Spanish as a second foreign language. Other areas of study such as careers, health education, equal opportunities and citizenship are taught through the Personal, Social and Health Education programme.
Throughout the teaching of the Key Stage 3 curriculum students are given the opportunity to develop the key skills of information technology, communication and application of number.
